Choosing the Right Red Jacket Submersible Pump — Buyer’s Guide
Choosing the right Red Jacket submersible pump isn’t just about picking horsepower — it’s about matching pump capacity to your site’s fuel demand, piping layout, and number of dispensers in use at the same time.
The table below highlights only the key differences between the three Red Jacket submersible pump models so you can quickly see how they scale up.
| Model | Horsepower | Best Fit Applications | Flow Capacity Impact |
| 0.75 HP | 0.75 HP (0.56 kW) | Small retail stations, light-duty islands, or tanks feeding 1–3 nozzles at a time | Adequate for low-to-moderate demand; best where only a few hoses run simultaneously |
| 1.5 HP | 1.5 HP (1.13 kW) | Mid-size stations or fleet fueling with 5–8 nozzles operating together | Higher throughput; maintains good flow per hose even during busy periods |
| 2 HP | 2 HP (1.5 kW) | High-volume stations, truck stops, or multi-dispenser islands | Delivers the strongest flow/head; ideal when long piping runs or 8+ nozzles may run simultaneously |
Below, we explain a real-world example so you can see how to decide between the 0.75 HP, 1.5 HP, and 2 HP Red Jacket submersible pump models.
Example: A Station with 4 Tanks and 20 Nozzles
This station has the following setup:
- 97# gasoline: 3 nozzles
- 93# gasoline: 12 nozzles (this is the busiest grade at the site)
- 90# gasoline: 3 nozzles
- Diesel (0#): 3 nozzles
The station owner wants each nozzle to pump at about 40 liters per minute so customers don’t feel like fueling is too slow.
Step 1: Look at the smaller grades (97#, 90#, and diesel)
- Each of these grades has only 3 nozzles. Even if all 3 are pumping at the same time, the flow demand is not very high.
- A 0.75 HP pump provides enough flow for this level of demand.
Therefore, the station can use one 0.75 HP pump for each of these tanks.
Step 2: Look at the busiest grade (93# gasoline, 12 nozzles)
- This is where things get tricky. Since this grade has 12 nozzles, and it is the most popular fuel, the station must plan for at least 8 nozzles running at the same time during peak hours.
- If the station installs just one 1.5 HP pump, the total flow would be about 220 liters per minute. That means each nozzle would average less than 30 liters per minute when 8 nozzles are running together — too slow.
- If the station installs two 0.75 HP pumps in parallel, the total flow is still about 220 liters per minute. That improves things slightly but still delivers less than 35 liters per minute per nozzle — still below the target.
- If the station installs two 1.5 HP pumps in parallel, the total flow increases to about 320 liters per minute. This gives each nozzle 40 liters per minute when 8 nozzles run at the same time, which perfectly meets the station’s target.
Step 3: Final Configuration for This Station
- 97# gasoline (3 nozzles) → 1 × 0.75 HP pump
- 90# gasoline (3 nozzles) → 1 × 0.75 HP pump
- Diesel (3 nozzles) → 1 × 0.75 HP pump
- 93# gasoline (12 nozzles) → 2 × 1.5 HP pumps in parallel
This setup ensures that all grades can supply the required flow rate, especially the busy 93# grade.
Tips for New Buyers
- Count your nozzles, but think about peak use. Not all nozzles will run at the same time, but the busiest grade should be sized for multiple nozzles fueling together.
- Don’t oversize unnecessarily. A smaller pump is fine for grades with only a few nozzles.
- Consider parallel pumps. For your busiest grade, two pumps working together can deliver smoother performance than one large pump.
If you’re not sure how to calculate your station’s exact demand, just tell our team how many tanks you have, how many nozzles per grade, and your target fueling speed. We’ll design the best Red Jacket submersible pump configuration to match your needs.
